Human Kindness on display after Hurricane Katrina

Last Updated 9/5/2024Posted in Facebook Posts

It's been 19 years since Hurricane Katrina caused massive destruction and loss of life in the Gulf Coast area, especially in New Orleans.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it was plain to see that while natural disasters can bring out the worst in people, it can — and does — bring out the very best, too.
Take, for example, the friendship of little Tanisha Belvin, age 5, and her new friend, fellow evacuee Nita LaGarde, age 89. It was on Sept. 3, 2005, and they were being evacuated from the New Orleans Convention Center. Seeing that Nita was alone, Tanisha stepped up to hold her hand and provide a degree of comfort to the elderly woman.
More heartwarming stories and pictures can be seen in the book titled "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 2005," available from the Publisher at www.acadianhouse.com/south-louisiana-regional. This photo, taken by AP photographer Eric Gay, was published on front pages of newspapers around the nation, endearing the pair to many Americans.
